Leica and Lucero Popken were born in Austin, TX. The outdoors has always been a big part of their life. Dustin went camping for the first time, while still in his mother’s womb and he’s been swimming, hiking, rafting, snowboarding, fishing and playing outside ever since. Leica went camping on the Brazos river and created the bacon-pancake taco…

Lucero went camping at Enchanted Rock and wrote a story called “The Wicked Windstorm”. Dustin, Leica and Lucero take time to be outdoors, take pictures, make up stories, remember their dreams from the night before, talk about their dreams for the future, and howl at the moon. This part of their identity shows thru in their writing, as nature is a central theme in most of their stories, including their first published book, “Turq the Turtle”.

Leica and Lucero live in 2 different worlds. They spend half of their week at their mom’s house and half of their week at their dad’s house. Dustin lives in 2 different worlds. He spends half of his week working and trying to salvage some sort of a personal life, and half of his week being dad AF.

The story of “Turq the Turtle” was conceived out of a need to put into context the realities of shared custody and single parenting. The main character is a turtle that must learn to navigate the differences between land and water, much like separated families must learn to navigate their way back and forth between household dynamics. Basically, this is what it might look like if we were a family of turtles.
